I started my early career in Accountancy in Zimbabwe, moving to London in 1989, where I joined a UK listed media business, Crown Communications PLC and progressed to the board of a management buyout entity in the TV production sector.
From my experience with recruiters as both a client and candidate, I was convinced I could add value to the recruitment profession and joined an international recruitment group in 1996. I have not looked back and have remained in recruitment for 17 years. This group had 4 offices when I joined and with the team I helped them grow to more than 20 company owned businesses internationally, starting most from single person start ups with many currently being 100+ staff businesses. I was also a founding co-investor in the group’s owner-managed recruitment offering, enabling entrepreneurs to launch and grow their own recruitment businesses, a division that today has more than 130 offices globally and the group has won multiple industry awards across the UK and internationally.
Paul Russell and I worked together as Board level peers for more than a decade. Where Paul, as CFO, built the business from a structural, entity and commercial standing, my value has always been about building the company through people. I put solid operational and performance related infrastructure in place to attract, develop, retain and grow talent through the business.
During our time, Paul and I transacted, as acquirers or sellers, more than dozen businesses across the United Kingdom, Europe and Asia. I have served on the board of our trade body, APSCo and currently chair their Rest of the World Forum.
